Curious Cows on Bodmin Moor |
The next part of the route was on a lovely road over the edge of Bodmin Moor. Although we were now at 1000 feet, the climbs were much gentler than the rest of Cornwall, and the views were very nice too. We had considered following the CTC route instead for this portion, going along the north coast of Cornwall via Tintagel to Bude, but the burst tire experience made us wary of the steep hills on that road, and we took the easier route. We stopped for a ploughman's lunch at a pub in Week St. Mary, eating outside since the weather was quite good.
Just past Marhamchurch we left the NCN route which takes a more devious route to Torrington involving the famous Tarka Trail, and followed the more direct CTC route out of Stratton along narrow but empty back roads. We passed a lovely looking farmhouse B&B, but it was still quite early, and the bright sunshine and beautiful green scenery made cycling a pleasure, so we continued on. It began to drizzle for the last few miles along a brief stretch of the A386 into Torrington. Torrington itself is on a cliff overlooking the River Torridge, and there is quite a steep climb for the end of the day into the town. We stayed at the Knot Garden bed and breakfast. The proprietor is a cyclist and welcomed us enthusiastically, and admired our strange tandem. He also squirted my pedal, which was making loud clicking noises, with WD40, and that fixed it for the next 100 miles or so.
