Land's End to John O'Groats on a Bike Friday Tandem

Day 0 (June 14)

We flew overnight from the US to Bristol, which avoids the London Heathrow morass, and is closer to Land's End as well. Our Bike Friday tandem travelled with us in its two suitcases, with no problems. At Bristol airport we picked up our rental car and drove to Penzance, where we had booked a room at the Tremont Hotel, which turned out to be pleasant and warmly welcoming. (This was the only B&B that we had booked in advance: we wanted to know we had somewhere to stay on the first night!) We put the bike together on the pavement outside the hotel (this takes us one and a half to two hours usually), and went on a short test ride. It always amazes me that after constructing the tandem from suitcase size pieces, it never seems to need adjustments: everything just works. We took the suitcases to the local post office and posted them to my sister's house in Wales to be picked up at the end of the trip. The post office accepted them with no qualms, and they actually arrived in Wales just two days later. Finally we returned the rental car at the Penzance railway station, so that we were ready to start cycling the next morning. Not bad for the first, jet-lagged day!
