Cycling the South Island of New Zealand

Day 5 (February 18, 2009)

Hooker Glacier and Mount Cook
Hooker Glacier and Mount Cook

Mt. Cook's summit was pink above the clouds in the sunrise, showing me that indeed it was still there. Then the clouds came down almost to the valley floor. After breakfast at the Glentanner Lodge (actually rather good - bagel with cream cheese and salmon and good coffee), since the weather forecast was for a fine day, I set off up the valley, the bike nice and light with no panniers, cycling under the low clouds. As I was reaching the head of the valley the clouds began to lift and the snowy peaks emerged from the gloom.

Now, after 16 miles cycling and a 3.5 mile walk I'm sitting by the lake beneath Mt. Cook and its Hooker Glacier. The glacier is debris covered, but the face is blue colored with interesting curved striations of rock and ice. The lake is milky grey with a few icebergs. It's bright sunshine and quite warm.
